The 2026 Cannes Film Festival may have found its first major awards contender with Fatherland, as Sandra Hüller received a rapturous response following the film’s world premiere on Wednesday night.

Directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Paweł Pawlikowski, the black-and-white drama earned a standing ovation lasting roughly five minutes inside the Grand Palais, with much of the praise centred on Hüller’s lead performance. The actor appeared visibly overwhelmed during the applause.
Set in 1949 during the early years of the Cold War, Fatherland follows celebrated German writer Thomas Mann and his daughter Erika as they travel across a divided postwar Germany. Hüller stars opposite veteran actor Hanns Zischler, with the story exploring memory, fascism, exile and the cost of legacy against the backdrop of a country still recovering from World War II.
The film’s stark monochrome visuals were shot by Pawlikowski’s longtime collaborator Łukasz Żal, who previously worked on Cold War and Ida.
At just 82 minutes, Fatherland is also the shortest film in this year’s main competition lineup.

This year’s Cannes jury is headed by South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook, alongside members including Demi Moore, Chloé Zhao and Stellan Skarsgård. The festival has already become heavily defined by political discussions surrounding Gaza, censorship and the future of auteur cinema.
Following her acclaimed turns in Anatomy of a Fall and The Zone of Interest, Hüller’s performance in Fatherland is already emerging as one of the earliest Oscar talking points of the year.
